Mark Rothko's Orange, Red, Yellow has scored the highest price at auction for a work of contemporary art selling for £53.8million.

The 1961 artwork was sold at Christies in New York.

Edward Munch's Scream sold for 74.1 million last week setting a new world record for the highest price achieved at auction.

Sales director Laura Paulson described the work as a personification of Rothko's art.

The artist died in New York in 1970.
