Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, often referred to as 'the world's most beautiful woman' turned on the glam at Cannes last night.

In recent months the 38-year-old actress has been cruelly mocked in India for retaining a little weight following the birth of her baby daughter Aaradhya, but at last night's AmfAR Cinema Against Aids she defied all criticisms.

Bachchan wore a beautifully embroided saree and intricately sewn gold blouse created by Indian designer Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla.

The star of Bride and Prejudice, a Bollywood reworking of Jane Austen's classic, who was also named Miss World in 1994 said "The baby's here in Cannes, but not with me tonight, she's doing well. I can't complain about being busy with the baby because hectic is always being redefined in my life.It was easy to come tonight because I'm not making any films."

The Cinema Against Aids event aimed to raise $10 million (US) by persuading the well-heeled attending screen stars to part with donations.
