Facebook has launched its own email service, code-named Titan and set to be a ‘Gmail killer’. However, according to Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, it is “NOT email”!

Zuckerberg began Monday's San Francisco conference describing how high school students told him: “We don’t really use email. It’s too slow.” Hence Facebook's new messaging service was born.

So what is Facebook email?

  • Users will be able to have an @facebook.com email address.
  • It will be faster to use. Zuckerberg said: “Email is too slow… email is too formal. There is too much friction, like the filling in the subject line…. when people send an email.”
  • Facebook email will combine Facebook’s instant messaging system, SMS, Facebook messages and email in one place. Users will be able to reply across multiple devices to different types of messages.
For instance, if someone sends you a message on Facebook, you will be able to reply by in the same window using either the system’s IM system, by email, or by SM
  • All conversation history will be stored in one flow, regardless of whether it was sent by IM, email or SMS.
  • Users will eventually be able to ditch their phone number and email address. Joel Seligstein, a engineer at the company, said: "Relatively soon, we'll probably all stop using arbitrary ten digit numbers and bizarre sequences of characters to contact each other.
"We will just select friends by name and be able to share with them instantly."
  • Facebook separates a user’s inbox into three separate categories, which include those messages that are most important to you (“Messages”), those which are less so (“Others”), and the rest (“Junk”).

When will Facebook email be available?

The new messaging system is only live to those with an invite at this stage. According to Zuckerberg, it will be rolled out slowly across the next several months.
