Microsoft’s Xbox 360 hands-free motion control system, rebranded as Kinect, has been unveiled.

The device plugs into the Xbox 360 console and uses a video camera and an infrared sensor to track players' actions and translate them into onscreen movement.

Kinect, originally codenamed Project Natal, was showcased ahead of the opening of the E3 games expo, which starts on 15 June in LA.

The demonstration included white-water rafting, football, yoga and dancing simulations.

Kinect will do battle with the hugely popular Nintendo Wii console, which has now sold around 70m units, 30m more than the Xbox 360.

Kinect will score over Wii technology by removing the need for any sort of handheld input. However, competition will follow shortly from Sony's PlayStation Move controller and Nintendo's upgraded WiiMotion Plus.

Microsoft has said Kinect will hit shelves before the end of the year.
