Kings of Leon - Come Around Sundown

Any hopes that the Kings Of Leon may have returned to their incendiary Southern roots on their new album, Come Around Sundown, are immediately dashed by opening track The End, which sounds suspiciously like a slo-mo version of Sex On Fire, the big hit off their last album Only By The Night.

That album saw the Nashville quartet crack the mainstream – but at what cost? Come Around Sundown is Only By The Night Mark II, chock full of arena-friendly tracks devoid of any of the testosterone-soaked edginess which made their earlier LPs such wild rides.

Caleb Followill can still rasp and holler with the best of them but the ennui which comes from endless touring, and to which the band allude to on many songs here, is evident in his voice. One for the Leon’s Johnny-come-lately fans, perhaps.

2/5
