Morrissey has revealed that he is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.
“If I die, I die,” the former Smiths star revealed in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo. “And if I don’t, I don’t”.
The outspoken Morrissey revealed he had been receiving medical treatment for the last year and a half during which period he had been suffering particularly poor health and had been hospitalised on several occasions.
“They have scrapped cancerous tissues four times already, but whatever,” Morrissey explained.
“Right now I feel good. I am aware that in some of my recent photos I look somewhat unhealthy, but that’s what illness can do.”
Morrissey, pictured above last year, was the frontman of The Smiths until the Manchester band disbanded in 1987 after which period he began a hugely successful solo career, releasing a wealth of albums during several periods of activity, including his latest and first for five years World Peace Is None of Your Business, which hit shelves only earlier this year.
He has always been one to speak his mind though, ruffling feathers on many topics from his staunch views on vegetarianism to politics (the Royal Family are not his favourite people in the world). In a recent show in Lisbon he and his band wore ‘Fuck Harvest’ T-shirts in reference to Harvest Records, the label that had dropped him.
He was particularly candid with the Spanish press, and seemingly keen to address issues concerning his health, but was not lost for a word or without his famous wit, though, commenting on his recent unhealthy appearance.
“I’m not going to worry about that; I’ll rest when I am dead.”
