While your upcoming December holiday may be filled with travel, winter activities and adventure, there’s nothing quite like some downtime in front of the big or small screens catching up on the latest in film and television entertainment. With the endless options currently available, there’s a storyline and genre for everyone. In preparation for all things relaxation, here are the most excitedly awaited releases to enjoy during your holiday with friends, loved ones or the whole family.

Coming to Netflix UK

Around the world, Netflix has made its name as one of the best online sources for both movies and TV series new and old. As usual, this month holds a juicy lineup of releases that are sure to keep you up all day and night. Viewers can expect Netflix originals like Dumplin’ starring Jennifer Aniston, Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock and Relatable, which is Ellen DeGeneres’ first comedy special since 2003. New TV series being released include Borderline Season 2, Peaky Blinders Season 4 and How To Get Away With Murder Season 4. Naturally, the month will also see an array of festive releases leading up to Christmas, such as The Princess Switch, The Holiday Calendar and The Christmas Chronicles.

On the telly

The online world of entertainment might be taking over, but British TV still has many fan favourites out this holiday. Available on cable network channels this month is the hilarious Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, Doctor Who Season 11 and Strictly Come Dancing Season 16. Fans also won’t want to miss I’m A Celebrity 2018 edition, which offers viewers an interactive experience of voting contestants out of the show, taking reality TV to a new level. The I'm A Celebrity phenomenon is so popular that it's even possible to bet on eliminations and final winners with bookmakers such as Paddy Power. What’s more is that you can also bet on the possible outcomes of the show, be it a bet on the winner, the loser or winners of titles throughout the show. With the grand finale airing on 9 December, this show is an exciting way to start the holiday viewings, along with all the other specials airing throughout the month.

At the cinema

2018 may not have been the biggest year in the film industry, but it sure is ending with a few golden releases to entertain you this holiday. Although it was released in October, A Star Is Born will be screening at the cinema during December as it continues its outstanding reception around the world. The newly released biopic of Freddie Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody is also showing on the big screen this month and warrants a watch. The highly anticipated Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns are two more of the hottest releases on their way, both being revealed closer to Christmas but with plenty of time spared to watch and rewatch before the holiday is over.

Whether you plan to stay under the covers or venture into the cold to your nearest movie theatre, films and TV shows are the perfect entertainment for any break from the daily grind. Your options range from mature films to family-friendly, and the lists go far beyond these few mentioned, so you’re sure to have plenty to watch throughout the season.
