My Dad was born here...can I get a passport here?

I've come over here on a holiday for a few months from Australia. No working visa. I've become interested in working here suddenly and would like to apply for a passport. My Dad was born here so I'm pretty sure I qualify, I'm not sure if I can apply while I'm here in England. Is there anything I can do to obtain working rights while I'm here or would I have to organise it from back in Australia??? I've asked my old man to mail me, my own and his birth certificates. Have I got any chance?? Is there anything else I might be entitled to with a pommy Father? Visa or something. I'm quite new & clueless to this stuff. Any advice, greatly appreciated.

In all likelihood you gained british citizenship at birth therefore have the right to work and reside here. You have the same rights as someone born here except if you have children they may not acquire british citizenship.

I was born in Australia and I'm pretty sure I'm not a citizen here yet? Does anybody know the cheapest way to find out without paying the agency costs for advice?

You would have gained it automatically at birth.

My father was born here too and I was born in Australia. You are entilted to a Britsh Passport. Although I organised mine before coming to the UK back in Oz you should apply through the British embassy in Oz as you father will need to send an original copy of his birth certificate to them with your application.

Thanks for your tips, going to apply in Oz is a bit of a mission at the moment lol. I'm waiting for my Dad to send the documents and hope the rest goes smoothly. I'm struggling to find a professional I'm not related to, to sign as the counter signature. All the ones I know are family who for some reason are ineligible!
