Dresses in winter? It’s not as crazy as you might think! Everyone wears dresses in the summer months, but they can be just as versatile when it’s cold outside. With the right accessories, a dress can be both warm and stylish, offering a very real alternative to trousers for almost every occasion.

Looking to add a couple of ‘wear anywhere’ dresses to your winter wardrobe? Here are our top tips for picking a perfect dress for winter:

Layer Up

The best winter dresses are versatile pieces that you can mix and match. These are dresses with infinite styling possibilities, such as this snake print wrap dress from SilkFred. Pair it with woolen tights, a coordinating polo neck jumper and your favourite ankle boots for a trend-led casual look. Add a fitted black blazer, opaque black tights and leg lengthening heels for fun, fashion-forward office wear. Remember that the more ways you can wear a dress, the more you can afford to invest in it!

Look for dresses that you can layer with sweaters, cardigans, and other warm winter accessories to ensure that you can wear them no matter what the weather.

Take it to The Max

Maxi dresses are a great choice for winter, because you can wear thick tights and your warmest winter boots underneath and no one will ever know.

Pick a billowing printed dress with a dark base colour, such as this polka dot version, and pair it with a leather jacket or chunky longline cardigan for a look that is bohemian with a rock and roll edge. Don’t forget to add warm winter accessories, such as knitted hats and leather gloves, to ensure you’re as warm as you are stylish.

Party On!

It goes without saying that the dress is the perfect choice for any party. Dresses are fun and flirty, however they’re not always easy to wear when it’s cold outside.

The key to getting this right is to choose a dress that won’t leave your shivering: bare blue skin is not a good look on anyone! Instead, look for a dress that includes sleeves and finishes on the knees to cover as much skin as possible. Pair your dress with a cropped faux fur jacket or warm shrug to add protection from the elements, and an extra dimension to your overall look. Don’t be afraid to pick a coat that will help you to stand out from the crowd and inject colour into your outfit.
