It’s hard to precisely categorise the focus of the Horniman Museum and that’s what makes it so interesting.
It’s hard to precisely categorise the focus of the Horniman Museum and that’s what makes it so interesting – it’s essentially a vast private collection of esoterica, compiled by Victorian tea trader Fredrick Horniman (1835-1906), with a broad skew towards anthropology and natural history.
There are a couple of must-see highlights. One part of the museum is given over entirely to musical instruments from around the world – it’s a catalogue mind-boggling in its breadth and variety, all lovingly restored.
Elsewhere, the section of stuffed animals is also renowned; in particular there’s a bizarre-looking walrus, who was packed too tight and has since become a symbol of the museum’s slightly off-kilter vibe.
