Eat your own garden

Edible plants might have somehow become a bit cool of late – see The Foragers at Dead Dolls Club, Kew Gardens’ IncrEdibles fest, and cocktails at Midnight Apothecary – but we’re not altogether sure what to make of The Book Club’s upcoming ‘Biteable Botany’ event.

It promises an indoor picnic, complete with birdsong and blooms, where you’re invited to dig up candy insects, plant candy flowers and pot your own cake. No, we’ve no idea what they’re on about either, but it sounds ... interesting. Tickets to this ‘edible installation’, running June 23 from 2pm, are £15.

Saffa sipping

This Wednesday sees a collective of South African independent wineries offering up their wares at a mass tasting in south London. The vino fest at Southwark’s Blue Fin Building will have 15 Saffa indie wine producers in attendance, and you’re invited to sup some samples between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Tickets are £20 – book in advance from the site below.

Seventies speakeasy

Forget the Smeg fridge – there’s a new hidden speakeasy in a branch of The Breakfast Club in town. The trendy brunch chain’s Battersea venue has an in-cafe launderette with a secret sliding wall. Go on through and you’ll find yourself in a Seventies bachelor pad – thing pink flamingos, bamboo decor and barmen in Hawaiian shirts – serving up retro disco drinks (pina coladas, mai tais, et al). Good grief.
