We reckon there are less than a handful of independent bars in London that tick the great atmosphere, top-notch food and cheap cocktails boxes – and they all seem to be in Brixton Market. Seven is one of our faves.

The scene Decor-wise, this chaotic, two-storey bar rocks a slightly daft, found-it-in-a-skip aesthetic, with graffiti and artwork covering the walls. Somehow it works.

One of their big selling points is the cocktail menu – everything on it’s a fiver – which includes sugary tipples such as crème brûlèe martinis, and blueberry and apple teatinis. The only downside is this place is understandably rammed at weekends, so you’ll probably spend a good portion of your evening trying to find out what happened to your drinks order.

The grub Most of the Spanish menu is made up of pintxos, the Basque region’s version of tapas, heavy on the regional meats and cheeses. Seven also does superb and very reasonably priced sharing platters.

Behind the bar In addition to the cocktail menu, which is regularly updated, Seven has a range of Spanish beers, wines, rums, liqueurs and sherry brandies. They’re happy to make any off-menu drinks, too, as long as they have the ingredients.

Bill please Cocktails are £5 each; glasses of wine are £3.

Verdict Quirky but not irritatingly so, this place is a real winner. Just make sure you book a table, and order drinks two at a time.
