London's first board game cafe, Draughts, opens its doors for the first time this weekend.

Capitalising on the new trend of beer and boards games is London’s first and foremost board game bar and café that combines a love for board-based competition with amorous affection for all things beer and booze related.

“When I first told people they reacted with amusement and disbelief,” mastermind behind this new and novel proposition Tony Hamand told the Guardian earlier this year.

“A common response is: ‘My pub’s got board games – how are you going to be ay different?’ but when they hear how many we’ll have they realise quite how different it is going to be.”

So how many board games do Hamand and Draughts have? Rather than just a battered old version of Monopoly like your local has, they have over 500 different games for you to pick from, taking up an entire corner and the walls of the new hackney establishment. You pay £5 to play one for as long as you like, simple as. There’ll be brilliant coffee for the caffeine-hounds, food and snacks to kee those energy levels up, as well as a large range of local craft beers, ales and wines for “those late night sessions”.

This part Kickstarter-funded project aims to become a new cornerstone of the community and a real local hub for hanging out and playing games.

“There’s a whole generation who grew up playing video games but are now at an age where they don’t want to sit around doing that in the evening anymore,” Hamond said.

“We’re aiming it at people in their 20s and 30s who feel like they’re past going out and listening to rave music, but want to do an activity that’s a bit different to drinking at the pub.”

And check this out - if they haven’t got a particular game that you want, tell the good folks about it and they will get it in so it can become part of their ever-expanding portfolio of board-based fun.
