Queensland Ballet is bringing August Bournonville’s ‘La Sylphide’ to the London Coliseum from 4-8 August 2015.

Queensland Ballet coming to the London Coliseum with the legendary production of La Sylphide - by the Danish balletmaster August Bournonville - from 4-8 August 2015 .

One of the world’s oldest surviving ballets, La Sylphide, tells the story of a young man who encounters a sylph – a beautiful, ethereal creature – on the eve of his wedding. In the pursuit of true love and happiness, his life is sent spiralling out of control and into the supernatural as he abandons everything and ventures into the unknown.

Li Cunxin is the artistic director of the Queensland Ballet  and a man with a remarkable story. Born into poverty in 1961, he grew up in rural China and was selected at age 11 by cultural advisors to attend the Beijing Dance Academy with 16 hours of training every day for seven years. After moving to the USA as an exchange student, his allegiance to the Chinese Communist Party waned and he was detained when trying to visit his family. Eventually his Chinese citizenship was revoked. Li Cunxin's book, Mao’s Last Dancer, was turned into a film in 2009.
