Nine men dubbed the budgie nine have been released by a Malaysian court after stripping down to their budgie smugglers at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Malaysia.

They were arrested for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace and public indecency, after Australian Daniel Ricciardo’s race win on Sunday.

After four nights in custody they were cautioned by Sepang Magistrates Court and released.

The Judge was keen to point out that irrespective of their purpose the men had insulted Malaysia by revealing the country’s national flag on their swimwear.

They left court shortly after without conviction.
