A petition calling for Australia to put Steve Irwin on its currency is gaining momentum. Almost 20,000 people have signed so far.

The popular conservationist and TV personality, known as the Crocodile Hunter, died in 2006 when a stingray's tail stabbed him in the heart.

The petition calls on citizens to pay their respects and points out that the younger generation aren't in touch with who is representing their currency.

Irwin's face appeared on Australian dollar coins in 2009.

The chief executive of the Royal Australian Mint has invited people to send in a formal proposal.
