A Bonfire Night firefighter strike in London has been called off as fire crews respond to public fears that the evening could end in disaster.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has called off the strike citing worries that the private company pulled in to provide cover on Bonfire Night would not be sufficiently experienced to deal with an emergency.

FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: "We have listened to the concerns about public safety, and we have watched the work of the private contractors who are supposed to protect Londoners with mounting concern."

Firefighters were planning to strike in protest over the proposed sackings of firefighters who refuse to accept new working conditions and shift changes.

However, the threat of sackings has now been lifted, according to the FBU.

Police warning for Bonfire Night

Meanwhile police have warned that bonfires and illegal fireworks could lead to serious injury or even death this Bonfire Night.

It has been revealed that deliberate fires on Bonfire Night cost more than millions of pounds a year for firefighters to tackle.

The best places to celebrate Bonfire Night and watch some fireworks.
