Elton John and his partner David Furnish have made the cut – they will be among the 2000 or so guests to attend the royal wedding.

Sir Elton, who was friends with Prince William’s mother Diana and performed a specially tailored version of Candle In The Wind at her funeral in 1997, did not expect to be invited.

"I don't know them (princes William and Harry) very well.” he told HollyScoop recently. “I've only met them twice - once when they were young and once at the Diana Memorial Concert... I knew their mother but that is the only thing. I'm not playing at the wedding. I haven't been asked and I don't expect to be asked."

But the pop/rock superstar behind such indelible hits as Rocket Man and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road has confirmed he will be attending Westminster Abbey on April 29 for the royal nuptials.

And he won’t be performing, despite swirling media rumours suggesting otherwise.

Sir Elton admitted to Canada's CTV that he is a big fan of William’s missus-to-be Kate Middleton: "She is very discreet, she is a very beautiful girl." He also believes that Prince William will make “a tremendous king”.

But he couldn’t resist taking a sideswipe at one aspect of the wedding: he described William's decision to give his future wife Diana’s monstrosity of an engagement ring as "a little odd".
