Mad Men star Jon Hamm has lashed out at the celebrity culture pervading Western society, saying it does no one any good to elevate ‘idiots’ such as Kin Kardashian and Paris Hilton to a level of aspiration.

“Whether it's Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated,” he told April's Elle UK magazine.

“Being a f***ing idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you're rewarded significantly.

"And incuriousness has become cool. It's celebrated. It doesn't make sense to me."

Hamm said he did not buy into the media-driven idea that blonde, skinny women are the epitome of beauty in modern society, saying curvy women like his Mad Men co-star Christina Hendricks are far more beautiful.

Hamm initially struggled to get his big break in Hollywood and imposed a five-year deadline on himself to land a major role.

He added: "I knew a few people who had gone a little longer than that and it turned into a depressing model."

He isn't impressed by aging stars trying to cling to their youth.

"A town like this not only celebrates but insists on the cult of eternal youth, so I can see how it happens. But if you're in your forties and fifties and you're spending two or three hours in a hair salon getting your highlights done... Well, that's not my game."
