British number one Laura Robson has defeated Colombian Mariana Duque-Marino in straight sets to enter into the third round of Wimbledon 2013.
After overcoming some difficulty with her serve, the nineteen-year old Briton managed to break Duque-Marino early on in the match, winning 6-4 6-1 under the Centre Court roof in one hour and 13 minutes.
Robson had the opportunity to seize the first set 6-2, but was unable to due to the Colombian’s strong forehand attacks.
Eventually, Robson found her feet and despite being tested by Duque-Marino’s backhand slices, she pulled through with her powerful, controlled forehanded shots.
Robson admitted that initially, she was nervous about her Centre Court appearance to the BBC “I was feeling nervous but then I thought she was probably more nervous than I was.”
“It’s a big win for me. Any match on Centre Court is a big one and it was great atmosphere out there.”
Her win comes after her unexpected first-round defeat of 10th seed Maria Kirikenko. This is not the teenager’s best Grand Slam performance though – in the 2012 US Open, Robson reached the fourth round.
Robson’s third round opponent will be New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic, ranked number 71 in the world. If she succeeds, she will face the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska and Serena Williams later on in the tournament.
