Laura Robson and Andy Murray win through at US Open

Laura Robson's win was particularly impressive, as she knocked out former world number-one Kim Clijsters, who was playing her final pro tournament.

Clijsters previously won the US Open three times and would have been hoping to bow out of professional tennis with a bang.

But 18-year-old Robson, who has recently been working with a new coach, ended Clijsters' 22-match winning streak at the US Open with a 7-6, 7-6 triumph.

Robson said she had aimed to "work my butt off" and "just play as well as I could".

Clijsters has had a difficult year following injury, but last weekend said she was now "maybe the best shape that I have been in".

Robson's win has set hopes high for British tennis after Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon final in summer.

The Scotsman won his US Open opening match against Alex Bogomolov Jnr fairly comfortably, racking up 10 aces, but he did allow his serve to be broken on four occasions.

After the match he said: "There were a lot of long rallies because he is incredibly quick around the court and he always makes you play the extra ball. But I moved my feet really well today.”
