New Zealand proved too strong again for England in the second half of what was the second cliffhanger in as many weeks.
The All Blacks' 28-27 win, having trained 10-6 at half-time, secures the three-Test series for the world champions and extends their winning streak to 16 matches - one short of their own record for consecutive wins from 1965 to 1969.
Marland Yarde scored the only try of the first period but as so often happens the All Blacks turned up when it mattered with tries from Ben Smith, Julian Savea and Ma'a Nonu in a 20-minute burst that effectively put the game away.
Late five-pointers, all converted by Owen Farrell, came from Mike Brown and Chris Ashton but it was too little too late.
The loss for England follows last week's 20-15 loss that took a late try to snatch victory for the hosts though they can take confidence after pushing the All Blacks all the way and being the only team to have beaten them since the World Cup in 2011.
England now face the Crusaders on Tuesday in Christchurch before the third Test in Hamilton on Saturday.
