Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic has defended getting a lap dance at schoolies week, saying he was simply enjoying himself.

Photographs have emerged of Tomic, 21, on stage with two young girls gyrating on his naked torso in a Gold Coast nightclub.

However the young athlete, who was celebrating his birthday, said he didnt understand what all the fuss was about.

Whilst walking the red carpet for the annual Newcombe medal, he said: I think it (the outrage) was a bit weird. I was celebrating my 21st birthday, who wouldn't want to celebrate that? I had a two-week break and I know now there is a lot of hard work to do."

The tennis star has been in the news before for his wild antics. He has previously racked up several fines for driving offences including failing to stop for police.

Leading up to the Australian open, Bernard Tomic will be training in Melbourne.
