Portuguese is the cheapest European language to learn – costing around half as much to master as German, new research has revealed.

The guys at Voucherbox.co.uk looked into the costs and required hours for English speakers to start from scratch learning a new European language and go all the way through to fluency.

They found a typical person takes 600 hours to learn Portuguese with lessons costing an average of £10.02 an hour – making a total investment of £6138.

German is a more difficult tongue to master with the average learner taking 750 hours to become fluent. Lessons are also more expensive with the average at £16.02 an hour bringing the total to a whopping £12,013 – almost twice the cost of Portuguese. 

Spanish was also found to be one of the best value languages to learn with a total costing of £6,157. This included 600 hours of language priced at £10.26 per hour. 

Italian and French both also took 600 hours to learn but the average cost per hour meant they came in at £7,004 and £8,171 respectively. 

European languages on the whole were much easier for English speakers to master than other world languages.

To learn Korean, you must set aside a whopping £41,155, as well as dedicating 2,200 to the language. It was revealed that as well as being one of the most difficult languages to crack, it will also cost £18.71 per hour.

Meanwhile Mandarin Chinese, will set you back a total of £29,367, while Japanese is also expensive, priced at an average of £24,375.
