A cyclist decided to ride his bike down the hard shoulder of the M1 motorway.

The hair brained cyclist took to the southbound carriageway of the M1 motorway in Hertfordshire before worried motorists altered the authorities.

The police arrived and safely escorted the cyclist off the motorway at junction nine near Redbourn, after which they took to Twitter.

“Somebody thought it was ok to cycle to London on the M1, escorted safely off at Redbour,” Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit (BCH Road Policing) tweeted, along with a picture of the unnamed cyclist and the hashtag ‘don’t be a dummy’.

The dummy part of the tag refers to a road safety campaign and is not intended as a derogatory term, the BCH Road Policing unit were quick to point out, too.

The crazy cyclist reportedly told officers he was on his way to London but after being told that riding pushbikes on motorways was firstly against the law and secondly incredibly dangerous to both himself and other motorists he opted to take the train instead.
