Jane Austen is to appear on the £10 note most likely from 2017, the Bank of England has revealed.
“Jane Austen certainly merits a place in the select group of historical figures to appear on our banknotes,” the Bank of England governor Mark Carney said today to The Guardian.
Earlier this year it was revealed that Sir Winston Churchill would appear on the £5 note from 2016, replacing the only other women other than the Queen to appear on a note, social reformer Elizabeth Fry.
The decision to replace Fry though sparked debate about the under representation of women on the Bank of England notes.
The Pride and Prejudice author will replace the current face of the £10 note Charles Darwin.
