Thieves in Greater Manchester have managed to steal a cash machine containing thousands of pounds from a Tesco Express - by digging a 50ft tunnel under the building.

As reported in The Guardian, a police spokesman confirmed that money contained in cash boxes was taken, and the thieves then made their exit via the tunnel. He would not say exactly how much was taken, but said it was in tens of thousands.

Detectives investigating the case believe that the gang could have spend months digging the tunnel, which starts in a patch of wasteland.

Greater Manchester police are appealing for witnesses who may have spotted people acting 'suspiciously, and possibly covered in soil'.

They believe that the theft happened last Friday, between midnight and 6am.
