If you're worried about getting your passport sorted out, please don't worry - Tourism minister Helen Grant suggests that you should take advantage of the weather and holiday in the UK.

Her short-sighted comments have angered people who are waiting for their passports to be processed by HM Passport Office, which is currently working through a backlog of applications.

The establishment has been snowed under after receiving a huge amount of applications this year - the highest demand for 12 years.

Ms Grant, who is currently enjoying the sunshine in Brazil, said that she was 'confident' that passports would be ready for people wanting to take summer holidays.

Speaking to House magazine, she suggested that a week somewhere hot by an azure pool couldn't compare to watching sport on the telly.

"We have some fantastic holidays here," she said. "There are lots of opportunities to build your holiday around a spoilt-for-choice list of events; the Tour de France Grand Depart, we've got the golf, we've got the Commonwealth Games, we've got football that we can watch on the TV.

"[The UK] is a wonderful place to have your holiday."
