A Florida man has been jailed for 100 days after he was caught by his wife having doggy-style sex - with the family's pet chihuahua.

Manuel Ramon Gonzalez, 61, from Palm Beach County, was turned in by his shocked wife after she looked at live security camera footage and saw her husband coming perilously close to giving the dog a boning near the couple's patio door.

Mrs Gonzalez began divorcing her husband before shopping him to stunned cops. The father of three, who admitted animal cruelty and sexual activity with an animal, was also handed 12 months' probation.

A police report about the incident included testimony from a dog expert who said the Chihuahua was in an uncomfortably submissive posture, with his head and ears down, while Gonzalez abused him and touched himself. Mrs Gonzalez then raced outside to confront her husband.

The expert noted that the dog had tried to escape and "did not like what was happening". The unfortunate pet also bore marks of physical trauma afterwards.

The website claims that Florida is the number one US state for animal abuse crimes. Officials say Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control responds to nearly 30,000 calls a year - roughly half of them for possible abuse cases.

Florida officially outlawed bestiality only in 2011, but sexual activity with an animal is now punishable in the state by up to a year in prison or a $1000 fine. Animal cruelty also carries a possible 12-month sentence plus a fine of up to $5000.
