Pizza Hut Australia has been forced to apologise after running a campaign giving away hamsters with its pizzas.

No, we're not making this up.

A Pizza Hut store in Mount Waverly, Melbourne, had a sign in its window promising: "Buy any 10 large pizzas and get one free small animal from Pets Story."

Unsurprisingly there was a backlash - and it was led by animal rights group Oscar’s Law.

@Oscar'sLaw posted a snap of the poster and Tweeted: Stop removing facebook comments from concerned people and remove these signs instead @pizzahut

Pizza Hut quickly issued an apology and said the promotion was "not approved by Pizza Hut Australia nor was condoned in any circumstances".

Pets aren't prizes.
