A stork’s long legs are no match for the long arm of the law, as an unlucky bird has found itself behind bars in Egypt.

Officials in the Qena governorate, some 280 miles south-east of Cairo, said a man brought the stork into a police station on Friday. He suspected the bird could be a spy as it had an electronic device strapped to its back.

The men got themselves in a flap as they worried the gadget could be an explosive or spying device. However, after examining the bird, they concluded it was most likely a wildlife tracker.

We’d imagine this ruffled the migrating stork’s feathers, but in light of recent chaos in Egypt, authorities and citizens are being extra vigilant.

The stork remains incarcerated as police await clearance from local prosecutors.
