To our untrained western eyes it looks like babies being dropped from a tower. Actually, that is exactly what it is.
In a bizarre ritual in the Indian state of Karnataka in southern India, hundreds of toddlers and babies were dropped from the roof of the Marutheshwara temple and caught in a bed sheet below.
The ritual, known locally as Okali, is said to make the babies stronger.
“This is a ritual that we have been observing from ancient times. The important thing is for us to have the spirit of worship in our hearts, because true worship is from the heart,” a trustee of the temple said.
