A footballer who became an internet sensation this year for his backheeled penalty was killed in a car crash.

The United Arab Emirates midfielder, Theyab Awana, 21, died in a car accident yesterday, while travelling back to Abu Dhabi from a training session in Al Ain.

The promising footballer was propelled to fame in July when his footwork helped UAE win in 7-2 to Lebanon.

Check out the famous penalty – at the 78th minute – where Awana runs backwards to the ball and spectacularly knocks it into the goal with his heel.

His fingers were then rapped by the coach, Srecko Katanec, who gave him a yellow card.
