Mr Huntley went trekking to see a waterfall in the Malaysian jungle last Tuesday, and sparked concern when he failed to return to the turtle conservation site at which he was volunteering.

Local police chief DSP Johari Jahaya reported that a search team discovered a body in a river close to the Juara Turtle Project at around 1:30pm on Wednesday afternoon (6:30am BST).

The body has not yet been identified.

Morni Mamat, deputy director of the Pahang state fire and rescue department, told Bernama that a forensics unit from the Pahang Police Contingent HQ is examining the body today.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “Foreign Office consulate staff on the ground are continuing to work closely with Malaysian authorities and are investigating with them as a matter of urgency.

"We continue to provide support to the family of Gareth Huntley at this very difficult time.”
