The 30-year-old passenger, who was flying from Nigeria to London, gave birth on a flatbed in the business class section of the plane after going into labour at 36,000 feet.

The plane was diverted to Palma de Mallorca, where mother and baby were rushed to hospital. They are said to be in a stable condition.

The plane carried on its way after the delay, and arrived in London two hours late.

As reported on the Daily Mail website, a spokesman for British Airways said: 'Our cabin crew, who are trained in birthing procedures, assisted with the delivery of a baby on board our flight from Abuja.

'We wish the mother and her little one all the very best.'
