Proving that vodka’s medicinal properties are vastly undersold, two elephants were saved from the Siberian cold by drinking the Russian spirit.

The animals were forced to face the frozen climes of Russia when the trailer they were travelling in was destroyed by a fire

In order to keep the animals warm, they were fed a vodka-water combination.

While the consumption of alcohol feels like it is warming, it actually lowers the body temperatures, but the director from Novosibirsk Zoo, in the region through which they were passing has been quoted as saying that the vodka prevented them from getting hypothermia or pneumonia.

They did suffer slight frostbite but have made a full recovery from their ordeal.
