Claims of a ‘racist attack’ on a Louisiana woman are now believed to be untrue.
Twenty-year-old Sharmeka Moffitt was allegedly set on fire by three hood-wearing men and suffered severe burns, but police now say she injured herself.
Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas announced Moffitt admittd to setting herself on fire after scrawling the words "KKK" and "nigger" on the hood of her car with toothpaste. Moffitt's fingerprints and DNA were also matched to a cigarette lighter found at the scene.
Her motives remain unclear, reports Gawker.com.
Moffitt’s family released a statement saying:
"Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter's injuries. While this was not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police as well as federal agencies. We are sincerely sorry for any problems this may have caused and wish to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love, prayers and support we have received from friends, acquaintances, church organizations and government officials."
Moffitt remains at LSU Medical Center where she remains in critical condition.
