A Norwegian woman who claimed she was raped in Dubai but got charged with perjury, having extramarital sex and drinking alcohol instead, has been given a pardon and allowed to leave the country.

Marte Deborah Dalelv was in the Arab state on business when she says she was attacked – on reporting the incident to the police, she was charged and issued a 16-month prison sentence.

Human rights groups and Norwegian officials have since been working for the decisions to be overturned.

An official for Norway told the BBC that Dalelv has her passport back and is free to go home – she isn’t being deported.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide tweeted his joy at the news.

In interviews last week Dalelv said she was out with colleague on March 6 when she was attacked.

After reporting the alleged rape to police, her passport and money were taken and she was charged four days later.

She claimed her attacker, a colleague, was given a 13-month sentence for extramarital sex and alcohol consumption. He has also been pardoned.
