Anthony Mundine hit the canvas fives times yet somehow survived the full 12 rounds in his loss to Ghana's Joshua Clottey at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.

Whether Mundine will fight again is in doubt after the judges awarded the bout unanimously to Clottey - 116-108, 115-109, 117-108 - for the Australian’s sixth loss.

Knockdowns in the third, sixth (twice), eighth and 10th rounds all came via Clottey's walloping left glove leaving Mundine's corner considering throwing in the towel.

He lasted the distance through and was gracious by his standards in defeat.

"I want to fight the best but I got caught early," he said.

"I finished the fight on my feet and at the end of the day you’ve got to have a go and fight the best."

Mundine's last fight against Shane Mosely was a farce with the former champion stopped early in the piece. If Mundine fights again he's next looking for a pay day rematch against Daniel Geale or Danny Green.
