Estonian player Kaia Kapeni has defeated Laura Robson 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 in a nail-biting match on Court One to reach the quarter-finals.
This fourth round appearance equals Robson’s best tournament performance – in the 2012 US Open, she reached the fourth round. It is also the first time a British woman has reached the second week in Wimbledon since Sam Smith in 1998.
During the tense first set, the world number 38 won a break point at 4-4. Nervously serving for the set, Robson opened the game with a double fault before giving Kanepi the break.
Robson managed to establish a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak, before world number 46 Kanepi took advantage of Robson’s errors. She subsequently took the first set 7-6 (8-6), much to the crowd’s disappointment.
Back on court, Robson appeared confident against Kanepi’s strong serves. At 3-3, Robson saved two break points by serving two aces.
At 5-5 however, Robson was unable to overcome three break points, eventually netting a return after saving two.
The British number one fought off four match points, before finally succumbing to Kanepi’s powerful forehand.
