The family that owns this Keralan farmstay know they have a pretty special place on their hands, which is why they named it Dewalokam – Malayalam for ‘God’s place in the world’.

Overview The land, which has been passed down through three generations, is overgrown with every kind of fruit tree you can imagine – coconuts, mangoes, pineapples and all sorts of tropical fruits are here for the picking.

Ask for a guided ‘Spice Walk’ round the garden where you get to learn about and nibble on anything edible that grows there.

You can easily spend a week just swimming in the lake, hanging in the pool with the family’s cute kids and eating as much of the tasty home cooking as you can stuff in.

Wow factor  It’s miles away from anything else that could remotely be considered a tourist attraction, so you can really get a sense of what Keralan farmlife is like. You also get a chance to help out with the cooking if you like, and take home a few local recipes.

Rooms
Simple, spacious rooms look out over the farm and are a good few notches more stylish than your typical homestay.

Bill, please
A standard double room is £80pn, full board. Sure, this might be a little pricier than a homestay in more touristy areas, but it’s definitely worth it.
