Travel Guide: Switzerland Highlights

4th Nov 2011 1:52am | By Editor

A train journey could well be the highlight of your trip to Switzerland.

Lucerne

The fairytale town of Lucerne is a favourite stop for tourist buses but don't let that put you off seeing this beautiful city. Snow-capped mountains overlook Lucerne — famous for the 14th century Kappellbrücke (Chapel Bridge)

Lake Geneva

This massive lake — called Lac Léman by those on the French side —  is lined with gorgeous towns and cities including Lausanne and Montreux. A scenic 40-minute walk from Montreux is the Château de Chillon.

Great train journeys

Train journeys in Switzerland are a pleasure rather than just a means of getting from A to B. The Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Moritz is a 7.5 hour trip, but the Brig to Zermatt let is a highlight. The lesser-known, but still awe-inspiring, Golden Pass takes you from Lucerne to Montreux.

Zermatt

The Matterhorn looms over this stylish ski resort. Zermatt is a cute car-free town that has top-notch skiing and snowboarding in the winter (as well as 36km of ski runs in summer). For information on the ski season visit the Tourism Office of Zermatt.

Adventure sports

Head to Interlaken for just about any type of extreme sport. Check your travel insurance policy and then try river rafting, canyon jumping, bungee jumping, skydiving, hang gliding etc etc.

Winter sports

Switzerland is the place to go for some of Europe's best slopes. Zermatt and Verbier are world-renowned resorts and the ski season usually runs from December to March. Although some resorts offer summer skiiing.
