One of our editors, Sean Newsom, had the best on-piste skiing of his season last week, in the Val di Fassa - part of the Italian Dolomites.
"The snow cover was deep, the temperatures low, and the pistes super-grippy. My guides were feeling pretty salty too. I haven't skied so fast in years," he reports.
He did notice the air temperature starting to rise at the end of the week, however, and this is going to be a feature of the next couple of days, too. So stay high for the best snow, and take a camera - the views will be stunning.
On Thursday, it's due to get colder again, especially in the east of the country. No significant fresh snow is expected, though some areas close to the Austrian border may get a dusting on Thursday.
In Cervinia, they've had plenty of fresh snow over the past fortnight: the last dump (20-40cm) was Wednesday, March 11, and settled snow depths vary between one and three metres. However, the temperatures have been creeping up in the sunshine, and the snow's a bit icy in the morning. Start your day at the top of slopes, and give the sun time to warm the lower slopes before you ski them (but not too much time- by mid-afternoon they'll be slushy).
Further east, Madonna di Campiglio in the Brenta Dolomites last had snow ten days ago - in a storm that left one metre of fresh snow on the slopes.
That brought the season total to nine metres so far, so as you can imagine, cover is excellent, and varies between 180 and 260cm, depending on altitude and aspect. However, it's getting warm now. The freezing point will be up to 2600m today, and in town they're expecting temperatures of +7C. Classic spring conditions, in fact.
Meanwhile, in the heart of the Dolomites, the resorts of San Cassiano and Corvara (which share the Alta Badia ski area) last had snow on March 9, and report settled snow depths of between 150 and 260cm. That's really exceptional for the time of year but no surprise, really, given that many parts of the Dolomites have had 10m of snow this winter. No-one can remember the last time there was so much. Today, temperatures could rise to +7C.
