Do you hear that screeching noise? It’s getting louder ... holy crap, it’s the sound of the school holidays.

And you know those crazy kids will soon be on your plane, in your hotel, ruining your holiday. Unless, that is, you book an adults-only trip. God bless the clever companies who are offering tot-free tours and getaways. We are forever in your debt.

1. Adventure Holiday, Costa Rica

One such company is Activities Abroad, which offers a seriously awesome-sounding 13-day trip to Costa Rica for groups of people aged 18 and over. It is a budget blower, but your £1995 covers 12 nights’ accommodation, transfers, most meals and all activities.

Meeting at San Jose Airport, and after a good night’s sleep, you will first enjoy a tour of a coffee estate before dining above the lights of Costa Rica. Day three will see you taking a boat trip through the rainforest to Tortuguero National Park to explore.

The next day you’ll kayak through the Tortuguero Canals before hiking through the rainforest and catching a twilight boat ride. On the fifth day you’ll travel inland to Sarapiqui and relax before your adrenalin-packed day six, which involves white-water rafting, horse riding and mountain biking as well as a walk along the tree-top canopy and a 275-metre zip wire across the Sarapiqui River.

After camping overnight, you’ll then  head to Arenal Volcano for a hike and to swap your tent for a luxury hotel. The next day you’ll canyon your way through the surrounding waterfalls.

This trip is about more than self-indulgent fun too, as day nine sees you planting trees with local school children, and day 10 offers a visit to an animal rescue centre, where you can get close to creatures of the rainforest who have had their homes destroyed by deforestation.

If all this leaves you exhausted, the last two days let you recuperate on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast.

2. City tour, Western Europe

Picking you up in Amsterdam and dropping you off in Barcelona, this whistle-stop tour stops off at Paris, the Alpine town of Lucerne and the stunning French Riviera on its way.

Join your group, aged 18-35, for a tour of the ’Dams Red Light District, a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower, a night at the Monte Carlo casino and more. The 11-day coach tour costs from £1305 including hotels, breakfast, five dinners and most activities.
