Traveling overseas is a great experience for anybody, but it’s not something that most of us fine very easy to pull off, especially for long periods of time.

If you read internet travel sites at all, you’ve come across accounts of global expats and others who make travel something they take part in for half of the year or more. You may wonder how that is possible.

Even if you can’t travel year round like that, you can probably travel internationally a little more than you think. There are a host of new ways to keep in touch with work and family while you’re on the road. Here are a few of the best.

1)    Have Multiple Channels of Communication Open. In the old days, there was only one way to communicate with people who lived in other countries, be they family, employers, or what have you. The communicator would have to write a letter, which would eventually be put on a boat, sailed across an ocean, and then delivered by hand to the recipient sometime in the next decade or so. Today, there are lots of ways to communicate with people overseas. You can start with phone cards from NobelCom which will give you voice to voice communication access no matter where in the world you find yourself. Next, you should have one or more of the communication apps for your phone, which can give you a second layer of voice to voice communication access in certain situations. Make use of Email, Skype, and even old fashioned letters. All of these should keep you in touch with the people who matter most.

2)    Get Work that Can Be Done Remotely. If you are planning to travel in the future, start talking to your employer about taking on remote work. Even if this kind of work is not part of your current job description, you may be able to make the transition by the time it comes to catch your flight. If you have time to change jobs or to build a freelance career, you’ll be able to have income anywhere in the world you can catch an internet connection. Finally, you can even work for yourself by writing about your experiences on a blog or other revenue-generating site.

3)    Bring the Family. If you find that international life is the life for you, maybe it’s time to emigrate with the people who matter most. While it is expensive and time-consuming to make this dream a reality, it is possible for most people. After all, your ancestors probably came to your country as immigrants, and the same can work for you, though probably under much better circumstances. Even if you don’t want to make your family trip permanent, it’s easier than ever to travel with family and children.

Traveling internationally is a great blessing, one that you should find a way to do regardless of your situation back home. The above techniques can make your travel abroad a much more workable situation for your family and your employer.
