Top tips for first time travellers?

Plan ahead. Alaska is bigger, more remote and more challenging than you imagine. Remember you’re in a wilderness where weather conditions change in an instant.

Secret off the tourist trail spot?

My favourite spot is McCarthy in Wrangell-St Elias National Park – you can climb on glaciers up sheer walls of ice. It’s a massive adrenaline rush.

Any preparation advice?

Don’t cut corners. Pretty early on I ventured out into the wilds of Denali without much more than a poncho and a bag full of tins of beans. Needless to say, we were embarrassingly unprepared and I nearly died from hypothermia!
