Police have arrested a 17-year-old
after two Christchurch banks were robbed in quick succession this
afternoon.

At 1.45pm a man described as Caucasian entered the ANZ bank on
the corner of Cathedral Square and Hereford St and gave a note to a
teller demanding money. A sum of money was handed over.

A note was also presented to a teller half an hour later at the
Westpac Bank on Riccarton Rd.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey said police believed the
two events were related.

The youth will face two charges of aggravated robbery when he
appears in Christchurch District Court tomorrow.

Mr Harvey would not comment on any details of the contents of the
note, but said it was sufficient to cause one of the tellers to hand
over some money.

The bank staff involved were traumatised by the events, and were
getting counselling from their respective banks, he said.
