Mercado Chileno is a one off event held over two days set in Old Spitalfields Market, one of London’s iconic Victorian covered markets. There will be well over 300 wines opened from over 50 wineries giving visitors the opportunity to discover vinous gems from across the country and to meet up with many of the winemakers.
To help guide visitors round the winery stalls, infamous wine experts the Three Wine Men (Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin MW) will be out and about in the crowd throughout the event, suggesting wines to try and spicing things up with tales of their trips to Chile. They will also embark on a spot of speed tasting with those brave enough! Quick fire mini tastings where visitors may find their new (wine) love while the clock ticks and before the buzzer goes.
Olly Smith (one third of the Three Wine Men!) says “Filming in Chile over several months taught me many things: 1. The first pisco sour is never enough. 2. Never feed you own hair to a llama. 3. The diverse mountains, coast, deserts and glaciers of Fthis incredible wine kingdom hold the keys to its treasury of wine styles. Join me, Tim and Oz at Mercado Chileno to taste some of Chile’s most prized gems.’
Wine isn’t the only part of the story for Mercado Chileno however:
FOOD – A Chilean chef will take visitors on a gastronomic journey from the north to the south of Chile, tasting various dishes on the way. There will be a feature demonstration during each session of Mercado Chileno, but the chef will be there throughout, talking through Chilean produce and handing out tasting samples. We are also delighted that Rica Rica, a Chilean café in London will join us with a stall at Mercado Chileno, bringing their twist on traditional Chilean street food.
To bring food and wine together, Susy Atkins from the Sunday Telegraph and Delicious Magazine who is also a regular on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, will be on hand to bring together the food and the wine side of things from Chile.
MUSIC AND DANCE – a traditional dance group are flying in from Chile especially for Mercado Chileno. Watch them perform the passionate Cueca dance while the musicians provide a backdrop of Chilean folk music.
SIP ON A PISCO – Try out the infamous Pisco Sour at our own Pisco Cocktail bar! Guest can try out a free tasting sample or buy a glass and sit back in the market square and listen to the music.
DISCOVER CHILE – Turismo Chile will be there to put the spotlight on Chile’s extraordinary landscape and the endless adventures that are open to the traveller. There will also be a stunning installation of a stargazing dome to emulate the crystal clear skies above the Atacama – one of the world’s best places for star gazing.
