John, Paul, George and Ringo striding over a zebra crossing on Abbey Road in north London must be one of the world’s most recognised and imitated images.

Fortunately for fans of The Beatles, the crossing that features on the cover of Abbey Road is still there.

It is kinda cool – if not terribly original – to walk over it a couple of times in the footsteps of the Fab Four.

Sadly the Abbey Road studios, just 5m up the road, are closed to the public, but the white wall outside is covered with adoring messages.

Curiously, it almost didn’t become such a shrine. Abbey Road, the last album the band recorded, was going to be called Everest, but they couldn’t be bothered with a photo shoot in Nepal.

So they simply walked outside for the cover shot. DANIEL LANDON

Verdict: a must for fans of the fab four
