Port Adelaide Power, who will play the Western Bulldogs at London’s Kia Oval on November 3, narrowly missed out on the 26-year-old after making a generous offer.

Young played in the Hawks’ 2008 premiership-winning side. He’ll replace Sharrod Wellingham, who has moved to the West Coast Eagles.

He joins the Magpies for their first season under Nathan Buckley without the guidance of Mick Malthouse.

Meanwhile, the Geelong Cats ‘rebuilding’ phase and vow to grow their own talent has been thrown out the window, with the club signing Melbourne Demons defender Jared Rivers, North Melbourne ruckman Hamish McIntosh and Josh Caddy from the Gold Coast Suns.

Geelong didn’t have any players on its roster this year who had been traded in.

The newly-introduced period for free agent trading deadline is 5pm today (October 19) in Australia, while the regular trade period closes on Oct 26. The 2012 national draft will take place on November 22.
